My mother\u2019s uterine tumor, the size of a cabbage, is Week 30, and this is terrifying.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When her mother is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Karen Babine\u2014a cook, collector of thrifted vintage cast iron, and fiercely devoted daughter, sister, and aunt\u2014can\u2019t help but wonder, \u201cfeed a fever, starve a cold, but what do we do for cancer?\u201d And so, she commits herself to preparing her mother anything she will eat, a vegetarian diving headfirst into the unfamiliar world of bone broth and pot roast.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/julijasukys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Babine_Sukys_Interview.pdf\">In an interview we did last year, Karen and I discussed food, family, illness, writing, and love.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This publication was especially bittersweet because it was the last project we worked on with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.assayjournal.com\/61-tribute-to-ned-stuckey-french.html\">Ned Stuckey-French<\/a> before his death from cancer in the summer of 2019. Ned was the book reviews editor at <a href=\"http:\/\/msupress.org\/journals\/fg\/\"><em>Fourth Genre: Explorations in Nonfiction<\/em><\/a>, where this convo appeared,\u00a0and also a fellow collaborator at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.assayjournal.com\"><em>Assay: A Journal of Nonfiction Studies<\/em><\/a>, which Karen founded and edits, and where I am a senior editor. \u00a0We miss Ned terribly.
