Well said, Julija! Writers have ended up doing all the work that publishers used to do, and yet publishers continue to collect salaries that start at double what most writers earn from their writing. I was at a planning event recently where a theatre promoter praised a writer/performer to the skies, saying he (the promoter) could make good money working with this writer. My response was, "So why does he need you?" I think writers should form a co-op -- I think PWAC has a grant to start one -- and hire our own staff to take care of the marketing side. We could hire great people at a much lower cost than 90% of retail price, which is what most publishers still get.

Julija,

Some of you aggravation will be solved by the forth coming Bill C-28 which will ensure you can stop receiving e-mails you don't want. As to promotion amounts, I think everyone's tolerance differs depending on subject, phase of the moon, time of day and a million other factors. Speaking just for me, I enjoy your posts and blogs and other matters and think you are doing a good and appropriate job. If at some point I feel I have seen too much by you, that probably will reflect my state more than your doing. Keep up the good work.

Hi Chris,
Absolutely, navel gazing and self-absorption are two of the biggest pitfalls of 1st-person writing. I think when working in this form, it's important to recognize the first-person voice as a device and not necessarily as a focus. The best personal essays, I think, often appear to be about one thing (like the person writing), but are in fact about something completely different.
